A Symphony of Feet: Silence With Others

Something I wrote while at a retreat at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center:

There is a deeply palpable peace here. This is the most sincere place I have ever been. Silence is the default setting. But not like the awkward silence I’ve experienced at Esalen, or Harbin or a library. Rather, it’s a very intimate silence. I feel more connected to each person because I have a sense that we are mutually tapped into the part of us that is the same. Talking about it would get in the way of experiencing it.

And there is so much going on without the typical chatter. It’s a symphony of feet. Every person walks differently and I can hear the drama unfolding beneath their feet each time gravel rubs against other gravel or blades of grass are momentarily squashed.

I spent decades getting people out of physical prisons by legalizing drugs. Now I help people out of their own mental and emotional prisons.
